Food In Baskets, Bottles & Boxes
Gifts of food, whether home made or store bought are always appreciated. You can buy decorative boxes, all sizes and shapes of baskets, or use bottles ranging from empty liquor bottles to the standard Mason jar. Visit your local resale shops or check on-line auction sites for great deals on baskets, bottles and boxes. For those of you who love to bake, whipping up a couple dozen of five or six different types of cookies and boxing them with a pretty bow make a delicious holiday gift for friends, family or even your child’s teacher. Kick the gift up a notch by adding some homemade candies. Need a gift for people who love being outdoors, pick up a nice inexpensive picnic basket and add a bottle of wine, some cheeses and crackers with a small cheese cutting board and a couple of pretty wine glasses for a classic gift. They’ll remember you for years to come each time they use it. Empty liquor bottles that have been cleaned are perfect for making a gift of flavored oils. Drop any combination of things like herbs, garlic, and hot peppers into the bottle; add oil and cap it with a cork or a pourer. A pretty bow around the bottle is all the gift-wrap you need. Most kitchen stores sell bottles of different shapes and sizes filled with all sorts of things, beans, peppers, herbs, pastas and oil that are strictly decorative for tables or countertops. You can quite easily make your own. A pretty gift bottle filled with colorful food items will add a decorative touch to their tables long after the holidays.
Has a friend or family member ever told you how much they love a particular recipe of yours? Find a nice basket, fill it with all the ingredients necessary to make the recipe, type the recipe out on a recipe card (they come plain and decorated), you can even find wire flower or butterfly shaped standing recipe card holders that you can add. Or you can add candles and holders to use for a romantic dinner. You can layer mason jars with the dry ingredients for a favorite soup (the beans, rice, pasta, seasonings etc) everything except the meat and the water. Again, you type up the cooking instructions, tie the jar with a bow and you’re ready to go. A small square of gingham cloth placed on the jar opening before closing the lid adds a pretty touchFor an even more personal touch (makes a wonderful anniversary gift for a couple you care about) you can use your computer to make a gift certificate (or you can make it by hand) entitling the recipient of your gift to a meal cooked, served and cleaned up after, in their own home. You go to their house with everything you need, cook the meal, serve it, clean up after yourself and leave while they enjoy a relaxing romantic dinner (or for someone you know well breakfast in bed served on trays complete with a rose in a bud vase and the morning paper). If you don’t care for the do it yourself approach, there are websites where for around $100 you can have the fixings for a romantic steak and lobster dinner for two delivered and that includes the pot! Everyone loves gifts of food.

Everyone loves to read about celebrities, and it seems like this year UK celebrities have been more talked about than ever. So, who are some of the most written about famous people in the UK this year? Well, one of them has got to be Cheryl Cole. Shes one of the most recognizable celebrities around right now and the media seem to follow her wherever she goes. Lately, she has been caught up in the whole X Factor drama and that has certainly set tongues wagging and pens scribbling.
Also widely talked about in all sections of the media right now are Kate and Pippa Middleton or to give Kate her proper form of address, the Duchess of Cambridge. The sisters have been hugely popular for a while but things really took off when Kate married Prince William (see below) on 29th April. Now it seems like both of them are in the papers all the time and, while you might expect most of the attention to be on Kate, its actually Pippa getting a lot of the coverage.
As always, the world of sport can also be relied upon for some juicy gossip and, continuing a trend that has been going on for the past couple of years, Wayne Rooney has to make the list of the most written about people of 2011. Most recently, he has been causing controversy over his decision to have a hair transplant because he was (reportedly) fed up with his football team mates teasing him about his hairline. Barely a day goes by without a report of his latest antics.
This year, Simon Cowell TVs resident Mr. Nasty has also been getting people talking and filling the gossip columns with ink. He has long been a regular in the British media but he seems to have reached new heights in 2011. First there was the will-he/wont-he over whether or not hed be judging this years UK X Factor. Then more recently, hes been causing controversy for inviting the aforementioned Cheryl Cole onto the US X Factor before she got ditched only weeks later.
Lastly, we come to Prince William. Hes always been written about widely because hes a future monarch and high-profile member of the royal family but arguably it was his marriage to Catherine (Kate) live on TV that catapulted him to new heights. As a search and rescue helicopter pilot for the RAF he also makes a lot of headlines and his work for the royal family is also heavily reported on. This attention seems set to stay with the prince for many years to come.

No Instruction
With the popularity of beading and jewelry making today, there are literally millions of different beads which you can purchase and add on to your crochet projects. Beads are very readily available and inexpensive to purchase. They can be found made of many materials and of all shapes and sizes. Whether you want to add a single focus bead to your crochet projects, or add many of them, it is simple to do and will produce great results every single time. No instruction about beading crochet would be complete without a warning about babies. If you are crocheting baby items, they are not appropriate for beading. The baby’s hands can work beads loose and they are a possible choking hazard if swallowed. The best way to deal with this is to avoid the issue all together by not adding beads to your baby crochet items.
No matter if your crochet project is simple or complex, adding beads is a simple process which you can learn very quickly. However, one very important thing is to remember is that your bead holes need to fit over the yarn or fiber which you are crocheting with. If the bead hole is hard to get on your yarn then you will find the entire process frustrating. And, the bead, if hard to string, will rub your yarn and cause it to fray. This fraying will cause your finished product to look less than professional. The first step in adding beads to your crochet projects is deciding how many beads you need and where you will place them on your project. Your options are limitless when you are adding beads to crochet. You can add one bead, you can add just a few beads or you can add many beads. You also have the option of forming patterns with your beads or making them appear more random. Once you have decided some of these things then it is time to hit the craft store to purchase your beads.
While you are selecting beads, take care to decide on the quality of the beads and the wear they may receive. If your item will be machine washed then it is a good idea to stick with sturdy beads. If your item will be hand washed then you can use more delicate beads. Whatever your choice in beads, make sure you use quality beads so they will last the lifetime of your finished crochet project. You will be placing your beads on your project in the reverse, so you will want to line up your beads in reverse order, if they are not all the same. When you are going to embellish your crochet with beads you have two choices of how to do it. The first choice is to add your beads as you crochet. To do this you will want to feed your beads onto your crochet hook when you are at the stitch where you want the bead to be. Place the bead right where you want it to be, and then make your last yarn over. This will secure down the bead into place. If you are working on an open or lacy design, you will need to add your beads as you crochet.
The second choice you have is to sew on your beads after your fabric has been crocheted. To do this, you will want to use the same crochet yarn or thread to sew on your beads that your fabric is made of. This will allow the thread to blend in and not stand out on your finished design. This is a good technique for tightly woven crochet fabrics. Adding beads to your crochet projects gives you a way to make a simple item really have some sparkle and visual interest. Whether you choose to add a single bead or thousands, the process is simple and you can do it well with very little practice.

Many Crafters Are Drawn To Quilting
Many crafters are drawn to quilting because of the wide variety of beautiful fabrics available. Walk into any fabric store or quilting shop, and your eyes are nearly overwhelmed with all the choices in fiber and color. Bolts of fabrics in a rainbow of colors assail the senses. The contemporary quilter is lucky indeed to have the huge array of fabrics available to her. However, this embarrassment of riches can also lead to uncertainty in selecting the correct fabrics for a quilting project. While the craft of quilting was one borne of necessity and thus many different fabrics have been used throughout the years, far and away the most common fabric for quilting is cotton. Some historical quilts may use brightly colored wool, usually appliquéd quilts, as wool is a bit heavy to be used for pieced quilts. Cotton is such a wonderful all-purpose fabric which washes well (though be sure to pre-wash all cottons to pre-shrink it) and maintains its color and hand. Generally speaking, 100 percent cotton is going to be the quilter’s first choice. You may be tempted by the bargain blends on the sale rank at the fabric store, but think twice before you commit to these fabrics. For a little bit more money, it’s worth it to invest in quality fabrics for your quilt. After all, you’re going to be spending quite a few hours of your precious time making the quilt, so why not invest in the best? Besides, relatively speaking, fabrics for quilting simply don’t cost that much money.
One of the most important elements of choosing fabrics for quilting is color. Often this is a topic which confuses beginning quilters, but there’s no need to shy away from learning about color. Most people are far more adept at combining color than they imagine. First off, learn to trust your intuition (unless you know you are color blind!)-if you like the way colors look together, others probably will also. And remember that this is your quilting project and you should choose fabrics that you love the look of, and that you’ll enjoy working on. Another trustworthy way to choose the color of fabrics is to study nature. You really can’t go wrong emulating the way colors go together at the ocean, or in the forest. Go to your neighborhood park and study the various hues you’ll see looking at a tree, or the lawn. For those who want a bit more guidance, you can do a rudimentary study of color theory. Study the color wheel and familiarize yourself with the primary colors (red, yellow, blue), secondary colors (green, orange and violet), and intermediate colors which combine primary with secondary colors. Another aspect of color for fabrics is value-light, dark and medium. The values in your fabrics should be well balanced, and not too heavy in any one value. You might also want to consider the intensity of the colors in your fabrics, which is the brightness or dullness of a color. Familiarizing yourself with the wide variety of fabrics available for quilting is a pleasurable experience that will also enhance your enjoyment of the craft.

Choosing fabric for a quilting project can be as much fun as doing the project itself. Even if to quilters choose the same quilt pattern, different choices of fabric will make each quilt unique. Most quilter’s prefer using fabric that is 100 % cotton because they are easier to sew, mark, press and hand quilt. If you are shopping for fabric in a quilt shop you will rarely find fabric that is not pure cotton. Fabrics will also probably be arranged according to colors and print types. With more experience fabrics other than cotton may be added for variety. Not all fabrics are suitable however. If you are using an unusual fabric for the first time, or want to use different types of fabrics together, try a small test block first. Fabrics of a medium density, with an even weave work well. Loosely woven fabrics are prone to distortion, as are stretch fabrics. Silk, lightweight wool and some plastics may be used with experience. Both the color and tone of the fabric you choose will influence the overall effect of the pattern that you choose. Tone may be used to create depth and interest with greater effect than when using color alone. Good planning is necessary to achieve the desired look.
Color is greatly affected by the colors around it. Using contrasting colors will make pieces of a quilt block stand out from each other. Combing certain warm colors such as reds, yellows and oranges, in the same quilt block as cool colors like blues, greens or violets, will make them look more vivid.Combining fabrics with various print scales and styles can add visual texture to your quilt. Interesting visual effects may also be achieved by using colors of graduated values. Printed cotton fabrics are available in many designs and styles including batiks, homespun plaids and florals, tiny-grained prints that look like solids, reproduction prints, and soft flannels. Solid-color fabrics come in just about every color, shade and tint that you can imagine.Quilt blocks made from fabrics of the same or various shades of one color, but of contrasting textures can create pleasing results. Fabrics with a nap such as velvet, or fabrics with sheen like taffeta also provide interest.
Whatever fabric you choose for your quilting project, you must prepare it properly before you begin. Most cotton fabrics shrink when they are washed and dried. If you do not preshrink your fabric before you make your quilt, the fabrics may pucker at the stitching lines and the finished product may shrink in size the first time it is washed. To prevent this wash all fabrics first in a washing machine on a short gentle cycle. Use cool or warm but never hot water. You may use a mild detergent, but it is not necessary unless the fabric is soiled. Wash like colors together in case they are not colorfast. Machine dry the fabric and press it with an iron. You are now ready to begin your project.

For Many Years
The Grammy Awards are being hosted on an annual basis to honor best music talent in the record industry and is considered equivalent to Academy Awards. Originally called as the Gramophone Awards it was started by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Usually held in February, it constitutes nearly twenty genres of music with hundred and eight categories. The categories can be broadly described as Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Artist of the Year to name a few. Regular members of the voting committee are Jon Bon Jovi, Beyonce Knowles, Prince and Paul Simon. The Recording Academy and record companies choose the works of artist who are really talented. Over hundred and fifty members review this selection and assign the works to their proper category. The members of each category who are experts in their respective fields reviews them and votes for the nominees. Deloitte Touche, who are the major independent accounting firm, then tabulates the ballots. The works, which have been produced in a time limit of past twelve months, are considered, starting from October 1.
For many years the venue for the Grammy Awards was The Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, California that was also the home of the Oscars. But once the categories began expanding, the venue was shifted to the Staple Center, Los Angeles, California. The nominees and other non-presenting attendees are expected to pay for the ticket to attend the ceremony. In 2007, the entree fee for the members was $750, which later went up to $2500. To attend the official post party, additional $250 should be paid. All the attendees get a gift bag with lots of goodies in it like perfumes, jewelry, CDs and gift certificates with the Grammy award seal. The ceremony is telecast live on television and there are several live performances by renowned artists. The first Grammy Awards was aired on ABC channel in 1971. Presently it is being aired on CBS channel. On February 10, 2008, the fiftieth Annual Grammy Awards will be celebrated at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
From time to time, the Grammy Awards have been blamed that they consider only the mainstream music and do not take alternative groups into consideration. The rumor was further heightened by criticism that the big record companies are influencing Grammy Awards. Many even say that Grammy Awards doesn’t honor the artist’s talent; rather it’s just held to promote the music industry as a whole and never understood the sentiments of the common people. The critics also blame the Grammy Awards to use this platform for advertising the recording industry. Many also question the nominating and the voting process from time to time. Sir Georg Solti received the largest number of Grammy awards in a year. He was the conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and he received a total of thirty-one Grammys. U2 is the band, which received the most number of Grammys, a total of twenty-two. In a single night Rick Rubin won the maximum awards. He received five awards at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. Grammy Awards have even faced fraud when the reality of the pop group Milli Vanilli came to light. The group just lip-synced the song sung by someone else, which resulted in their Grammies being taken back from them instantly. But the awards still go on attracting people from all walks of life.

An interesting way to add color, texture and dimension to your sewn items, is to add couching. Couching is derived from the French word couchier and is the art of embroidering by laying threads flat on a surface and sewing them down by stitches sewn at regular intervals. In centuries past, couching was a very popular form of decoration for the upper-class clothing of the time. People of means would often wear items which were covered in couched and embroidered designs. The couching of today is generally done by laying a length of yarn, cord, or ribbon down on a piece of fabric, and then sewing it in place with a zigzag or other decorative stitch. Today, couching is used to sew on many of the more decorative fibers and trims available to those who sew at their local craft stores. Applying any type of trim or embellishment to fabric can very drastically alter its appearance. Couching can be used to embellish and it can also be used to hide unsightly mistakes or damage on a fabric. If your garment has a stain on it, you can apply something over the stain by couching and have a renewed garment in no time. Couching By Machine – The Presser Feet, Needles and Thread OptionsCouching by sewing machine can easily be accomplished with the help of the correct presser foot, needles, and threads. There are five different types of presser feet which are used with couching. They are:
A Cording Foot – Has a small loop attached to the foot which you feed in a small braid, yarn or ribbon. This can be used to help you position your trim so that it is right-side facing up. An Open-Toe Embroidery Presser Foot – Is the basic presser foot used for couching because it can handle all types of materials and allows you to see them while they are guided and sewing into position on your project. A Multi-Cord Presser Foot – This presser foot allows you to couch with multiple cords at the same time. A Blind-Hem Presser Foot – Allows you to sew on thicker trims and near the edge of your fabric. A Beading Presser Foot – Allows you to easily apply strands of beads which can be wider than normal couching materials. In addition to using a special presser foot for couching you will want to use a larger than normal sewing needle. This is especially true when you are couching using denser fabrics or trims. When you select the thread for your sewing machine and bobbin you need to take into account if you want the thread to blend in or be visible. Using metallic threads can give your couching a whole new dimension. You will want your bobbin thread to match your sewing thread for couching. In addition, if you are using a light weight fabric to couch on, you will want to use a fabric stabilizer. You can stabilize your fabric by either sewing in a light knit interfacing or by using a tear-away stabilizing product. AS you can see, by using a couple special items and your sewing machine you can use couching to embellish you sewing projects. While couching is not difficult, it does take a bit of time to learn how to do. By taking the time and using the right items, your couching will be looking professional in no time.
