Playing a game that I played from years ago is like listening to a favourite old song; in fact it is a lot more than this. I spent hours on end playing some of these games back in the day and it would take weeks or months for me to beat the game. Going back and playing them again is like returning home; the memories come flooding back and it is such a great feeling. A song can remind us of the past but playing these games again is like going back in time; you really get to experience them all over again. I have games that I played more than twenty five years ago and playing them again really turns back the clock. Those people who made the rash decision to get rid of their old game consoles now have to pay a fortune to buy replacements. This really is the time for the retro game.

I would really recommend playing one of these old games consoles again if you can. It is really surprising how many memories you are going to dredge up just by playing a particular game that you played years ago. I noticed while playing that strategy that I had forgotten all about came flooding back; maybe it is like riding a bicycle and you never really forget. These games have been very much part of my life and spending time with them is like visiting old friends.

My voice doesn’t work, did I do something wrong? What do I do?

Plenty of things can cause your voice not to work right. If you think about how you sound while you are singing, then you might not sound your best. Not getting enough sleep can cause your voice to feel sluggish and not respond as easily as it normally does. Singing too much the day before or the day of an audition can cause your voice to get tired. The singing muscles are like other muscles in your body. The muscles need to be worked out, but they also need their rest. Emotions can have their affect on your voice as well. Crying can make the cords swell and feel puffy, too.

Do I have to be fat to have a big voice?

Absolutely not. The size of your voice is in no way related to the size of your waist. If this were true, then large people would be natural singers by default. Actually having more weight can cause more problems in the long run, especially with moving and breathing. If you’re used to that movement, then it’s not a problem. Rather than the size of your waist, the size of your throat really makes the difference.

My voice is really scratchy, do I have nodes?

It takes quite a bit of abuse to get nodes. Yelling for a day won’t get you nodes. Your vocal cords would swell, but nodes would take much more. Just remember that nodes are like calluses. If you don’t rub the cords the wrong way, you won’t have the problem. Sing in the high range if you are concerned. Nodes will for the most part only affect the high part of your voice. If you find that the middle area of the voice is all that’s affected rather than the other parts, then you may other problems.

Is there a difference between a coach, voice teacher, or accompanist?

Your coach will be someone that plays the piano well and can teach you the basics of singing. During a work session with a coach you may practice hearing the piano cue for your entrances in your song, work on the pronunciation of words, get tips on how to sing with the correct style, and find good places to breath within the text. A coach helps with some basic tips on technique and supports the work of your voice teacher.

An accompanist plays the piano for you but doesn’t give any advice. The accompanist won’t charge less than the coach.

Your voice teacher is the one that will teach you technique. While the coach has knowledge of technique of course, the voice teacher is the expert. The voice teacher may not play the piano so well but should make up for it with in knowledge and advice on your singing technique. Half of your voice lesson will be spent on technique, and the other half will be on other things.

I have a shop that sells art glass. My preferred art glass is paperweights. I have a lot of fun attending art auctions and buying art glass. I try to pay attention to what my friends and customers like and dislike.

I usually give people art glass paperweights that I find at art auctions for milestone birthdays and anniversaries. My grandmother turned eighty last October and I found a marvelous art glass paperweight for her.

The art glass paperweight that I found for my grandmother was manufactured by Baccarat. I was extremely lucky that this was one of the last things auctioned. A lot of people had already left the art auction when this item went on the block. My grandmother appreciated the pansy design since the pansy is her favorite flower.

My cousin loves frogs. She has managed to decorate her home tastefully with her favorite item. I have been searching for an art glass paperweight for her for years. I finally found one at an art auction I was finally year. The art glass paperweight featured a frog sitting on a lily pad and the frog was enclosed by blue water. It was really pretty and my cousin started using it on her desk immediately.

My aunt collects art glass paperweights. I have been asked by her on numerous occasions to find pretty art glass paperweights for her while I’m attending art auctions. Of all of the pieces I’ve won for her over the years, one memory stands out in my memory more than any other.

By far the prettiest art glass paperweight I’ve ever won at an art auction needs to be one that boasts a blue and gold Macaw. Rick Ayotte was the artist that created it and it was even featured in a novel of his work. He has manufactured many lovely art glass paperweights.

I have an art glass paperweight in my shop that just will not sell. It has been in the outlet the longest and I think I may have it priced elevated. I won the paperweight at an art auction previously for one thousand dollars. The paperweight was created by Paul Stankard and it ought to have easily sold for twice what I procured it.

I have no trouble at all selling art glass paperweights that were produced by Rick Ayotte. His work seems to draw the most interest. I try to win any auction I find for art glass paperweights he made. I won one not some time past that was pink roses. They looked so fragile and sweet. I know that this art glass paperweight will sell quickly.

There have been some inquiries at my shop for art glass paperweights by Richard Marquis. I haven’t discovered any in any of the art auctions I’ve attended recently. I considered some of the pieces he’s made and I’m not especially impressed.

I will look for the art glass paperweights at the art auctions I attend, but I won’t be going way out of my way to track them down. I will just don’t forget that Marquis is an artist that some of my clients are really curious about. I’m certain that I will find an art auction with one of his pieces in it at some point.

There were some inquiries about nautical themed art glass paperweights a number of years ago and I discovered a fantastic artist that made them. I buy every art glass paperweight I am able to see that was produced by Rick Satava. My favorite has to be the coral orange jellyfish that I discovered at an art auction an hour from my home. It was really pretty.

The coral orange jellyfish art glass paperweight was just the first Rick Satava piece that I’ve located at various art auctions. I’ve also found jellyfish in ruby and blue. They are stunning on their own or when they’re put onto a black light stand that has been built especially for them.

Most radio jingle fans remember fondly just about everything they ever heard by PAMS. However, the studio also was capable of horrid, embarrassing and sometimes expensive failures. Those audio flops were quickly consigned to the vaults, never to be syndicated.

All creative folks have peaks and valleys. Those who never make mistakes are playing it too safe. PAMS often took chances and usually succeeded.

Having said that, the first really putrid, unlistenable PAMS package in modern memory was recorded in 1960. After coming off the brilliant Series 15, “Living Radio,” which was heard on many stations, PAMS recorded the first of three high-school jingle packages. Dubbed Series 15A, “High-School Salute,” this series had the singers attempt to sound like cheerleaders as they warbled the names and slogans of local schools and teams.

The harmonies were simplified and sung a bit loosely — so loosely, in fact, as to be teeth-grindingly out of tune most of the time. The few brave program directors who ordered these cuts must have been tone-deaf. And they were few, indeed.

Interestingly, PAMS recorded another high-school series in 1963 (Series 25D, “The Cheerleaders”), which turned out great. Its instrumental tracks were smokin’, and the male/female octave singing was a bit more in tune. The series did well on such stations as KXOK(AM) in St. Louis, Detroit’s WXYZ(AM) and many others.

In the early 1960s, PAMS tasted success with innovative hits like Series 17, “The New Frontier,” and Series 18, “Sonosational.” But the winning streak came to end in 1962 with the release of Series 21, “The Friendly Giant.”

It was a huge stink bomb.

“The Friendly Giant,” piloted for middle-of-the-road WCKY(AM) in Cincinnati, was a mistake from the beginning. Apparently a new in-house arranger was unfamiliar with the PAMS practice of writing the instrumental tracks to accommodate a variety of call-letter melodies, so the call letters in this package were forced into a repetitive up-and-down melody that pleased no one. The all-male vocal group featured in the package sounded fine, but they lyrics were both lame and much too busy. The only other station to order this package was country-format KHEY(AM) in El Paso, Texas.

Let that I should digress a moment. I ended my high school career in 1970 which means I grew up under the influence of the sixties. One of the terms that was repeated often back then, and usually in reference to recreational drug use, was Mind Expanding. Another way of saying the same thing was Consciousness Raising. I believe that  mind and consciousness can be expanded and raised through minimal drug taking. I should shout out a Disclaimer here. The term minimal was used because the overuse of drugs consistently turns the user into a stump. End of digression.

An intense, emotional experience changes consciousness or awareness, or how and what you think about what you think about. This is an historically known tidbit, used since the beginning of time by leaders, speakers, politicians, and basket ball coaches. Two contemporary non pharmaceutically enhanced (usually) mind and consciousness expanders would be movies and books. Recorded music is an important addition to this topic but at this time let’s not. The writing of books allow readers to control the rate and depth of the assimilation of the message. You can pause and sort is out as you go. Movies are like drug experiences and carnival rides in that they can be intensely emotional and you you must ride it out to the end. I know you are thinking that I am still digressing and that we are lost talking about drugs and carnival rides and that I am a stump and what ever happened to Sara Gruen! OK, your right on all counts so I’ll tie it up now.

All the wrong things like war, poverty, and hunger seem to be too much a part of our collective awareness. The increasing population of planet earth needs a re-think in a hurry to avoid the doom and gloom scenario. One of the key areas that needs change in a hurry is man’s relationship to animals. The animal thing won’t be discussed by me any further here because our author, Ms Gruen, seems to have a black belt in this subject with her books and did I mention an up coming movie?
