Hobbies - How To Get Started With Oil Painting
Many people take up oil painting as a hobby in their spare time as it can be really rewarding. Our guide takes you through some key things to think about when you’re getting started with oil painting. Firstly, you need to get the right supplies. It’s definitely worth getting some decent paint brushes, but when you’re a beginner, don’t worry about spending lots on paint. Also make sure you get some canvas to paint on and supports to hold the canvas up while you’re working.
Once you have got all the equipment you need, you need to prepare it so you will be ready to paint. For example, you might want to check your paint brushes to make sure there are no loose hairs in them that might fall out while you’re painting. Also check the seals on you paint and learn how to thin it, as often oil paints can be a bit stiff to work with on their own. Work out the best quantity of water or turpentine to paint before you begin.
Next, you need to find a good location to paint in. Inspiration is just as important – if not more – as having any sort of artistic talent, so think about what you would like to paint and why. Once you have found inspiration, you also need to consider practical aspects. For instance, if you are painting outside, will the light be okay to work in? It’s important that you always work in good, preferably natural, light as this will help you see the colors of the paint properly.
Once you’re happy that you have everything ready, the only thing left to do is paint. When you’re just starting out, you should worry too much about techniques or what your pictures look like. The important thing is getting the paint onto the canvas and having a go at it, as this will teach you about your natural style and your preferred method of working. Also, you’ll never know what you can actually do until you try it, so just have a go.
Once you have become more comfortable with the art of oil painting, it can be a good idea to enhance your painting repertoire by taking the time to learn some new techniques. For example, you can learn how to add more depth to your paintings and how to paint particular objects such as water droplets or the sky by using tutorials. You can find these in books and on the internet. Art classes are also a good way of developing your skills and introducing you to new ideas.
