Relevance Of Halloween To People
Halloween, for me, is without doubt one of the special days of the year. On the other hand, it is not like the other holidays that we celebrate. it’s not like Chistmas where we celebrate Jesus Christ, or like Valentines day where we celebrate Saint Valentine the martyr and affection itself. This isn’t the case in Halloween. On this day, the souls of those who passed before us are the ones being celebrated. Pretty scary huh? Not quite, for Halloween is actually a fun celebration.
Halloween can often be conused with All Saints day, which falls on November 1. Halloween falls on the last day of October, the last day of that month. In the 1600s, the word Halloween was first manifested. A variant of the fuller Scottish term “All-Hallows-Eve” is what the word represents. All-Hallows-Eve is what they call the evening before All Hallows Day.
There are many ways Halloween is celebrated around the globe these days. Although it’s not celebrated in all parts of the world, in those parts of the world that celebrates it, its traditions and importance varies. In spite of this, other nations often follow the U . S. citizens method of celebrating Halloween, which can sometimes be seen particularly in iconic and commercial elements.
Costume parties is the most common method of celebrating Halloween, especially in America. The individuals will be dressed in costumes representing different characters. The costumes are sometimes like ghost, witch, ghouls although recently more costumes are being used like characters from TV series, Pirates of the Caribbean Costumes, space-themed costumes, and much more. Another prominent method of celebrating Halloween is the Trick-or-Treating of little kids. It’s where little kids wander the neighborhood, asking each house for treats or candies by saying the words “Trick-or-Treat” to the house owner. Oftentimes they oblige to the requests of the kids, but for those who don’t a trick awaits them, which is usually a mischievous but harmless trick. Although some people view this tradition as a nuisance, many individuals enjoy seeing little kids wearing monster costumes or Pirates of the Caribbean Costumes while roaming the streets asking for treats.
Halloween is rarely observed here in the Philippines, because people are more focused on All Saints day. But lately, especially in the city areas of the country, some people celebrate Halloween. Because we have no idea what it is, we didn’t experience Trick-or-Treating while I used to be young. However, in my elementary years, whenever it is nearing November, we would plan a Halloween party, although sometimes it doesn’t fall exactly on October 31. When we go to school that day, we would usually wear costumes instead of our uniforms. After our classes, which would be dismissed early because we would only take our quizzes and have no lectures, we’d have our party. These days, I see little kids wearing costumes (except more often in their casual clothing), asking for treats and candies at each residence. But you can see that their costumes are just improvised. For instance, a boy will wear a “barong” and put a lot of powder in his face making him a zombie or a little girl wearing a gown which will make her pass being a princess. Character costumes are very rare here, so I do not see kids wearing Pirates of the Caribbean Costumes. But at least the Halloween spirit is there. But still, like in the other countries, it’s a lot of fun to observe!
Halloween, which is really a fun celebration, actually has some profound meaning behind it. This celebration actually shows us lessons about death and mortality. Once our existence are lost, it’s gone eternally. Because of that we should value our lives. And also, we should always enjoy our lives to the fullest, for it only comes ones.
Have a happy Halloween!
