Constrasting Chinese Astrology Compatibility

Did you know that the year you were born, on the Chinese lunar calendar, identifies you with a particular animal symbol? Most people are familiar with universal astrology and the various signs of the zodiac that attach themselves to one’s place and time of birth. A Virgo, for instance is portrayed as a Virgin or a Wheat Bearing Maiden. But the symbols associated with Chinese astrology compatibility to universal astrology are based on the lunar year one was born.

The core principle of both universal and Chinese astrology are to identify personality traits based on the timing of a person’s birth. In universal astrology this timing is based on precise mathematics. In fact, the timing of one’s birth is so important in universal astrology that recording even a fifteen minute difference, in birth time, can lead to an entirely different interpretation of a person’s astrological birth chart. The place of birth is also important and is interpreted by longitude and latitude. Universal astrology finds great comfort in the use of mathematics to interpret a person’s personality traits.

Universal astrology uses symbols to identify each of the twelve signs of the Zodiac. The term “zodiac” finds its basis in Greek astronomy, which also provides further evidence that universal astrology finds its origins in an historical marriage of mathematics and science. Symbolism plays an active role in universal astrology.

Many of us have often heard people describe themselves through their Sun Sign. Someone born between the latter portion of July through the middle portion of August may say, “I am a Leo. A Lion!” The person identifies his or her personality with the traits of a Lion, which has fondly been referred to as The King of the Jungle. Therefore, many Leos tend relate their personalities to the qualities strength and leadership. From a completely simplistic stance, it becomes easier for the Leo remember ‘who they are’, in astrological terms, because the image of The Lion helps them identify with their Sun Sign’s qualities.

Both Chinese and Occidental astrology have the tools necessary to help people look deeper into their own personality traits and determine how they can grow during their journey here on earth. Each form of astrology is based on centuries of study. While the ancient Greeks are associated with bringing much of the symbolism we are familiar with into Occidental forms of astrology, the art of astrology itself is based on the science of astronomy which began long before the ancient Greeks existed. Chinese culture is documented on its own time-line and on its own Chinese lunar calendar and there is no concrete evidence that ancient Chinese astrologers came into contact with ancient Occidental astrologers.

The tiger is the symbol for the entire lunar year. The reference to metal depicts what type of tiger year it is, meaning that there are four different symbols of earth elements, which accompany different years, in addition to the symbolism of an animal. In Chinese astrology the lunar year is symbolized by an animal because it has been taught that near the end of life The Buddha called on the animals to visit him and only twelve showed up. It is said that The Buddha honored the animals that listened to his call by granting them an honored place in Chinese astrology.

If you are wondering how being a ‘pig’ and a ‘virginal maiden’ all at the same time can be possible, then you’ll probably want to explore the symbolism of each type of astrology in more depth. Exactly how with universal astrology measures up is unclear. While they are each unique in their approach, use different measures of time and different symbols to bring meaning to time and space here on earth, there are many similarities in their interpretation of personality types.
