Make Your Beats - How to Start
Whether you’re into soul or hip hop, still, the most definite path to branding yourself in the industry stays the same: you should create your beats while continuing on your own brand of music.
Understandably, the thought of making your own beats can be rather daunting. However, you should do your best to take this as a challenge rather than letting it dishearten you from chasing your dreams.
Making Your Beats Count…Start by Mastering Your Genre
Of course, don’t take this advice to the extreme and challenge yourself into developing a totally new genre. While that is surely possible, you might need to broaden your repertoire a bit more before making that your goal. All the while, nothing is wrong with dedicating your time to polishing your abilities and broadening your knowledge of your chosen genre. Examine the creations of your friends and see if they motivate you into producing your own beats.
Dedicating your time to excel in your genre means you’re already ahead of other debuting music artists as well as boosting your abilities as a musician.
One nice thing about the music industry these days is the improved availability to the needed equipment for enthusiastic musicians like you. At present, you don’t need a large mount of money to spend just to get hold of the technology for producing your own music beats.
Your beats will consist of three major components: midi drum patterns, audio loops, and bass line. These parts are used in virtually any kind of music possible so it’s vital that you’re completely aware of how they work and what they can provide to your music.
A song’s bass line is its underlying frame. It is composed of a set of notes or beats that will be played from start to finish and which all other elements of your song would have to work with in order to maintain an audible sense of harmony.
It’s okay to dedicate as much time as you want polishing your bass line. If your bass line doesn’t work, then the rest of the song won’t function either.
The second factor you have to consider is the audio loop. This is a favorite amongst rap and hip hop makers. They are usually used for adjusting your music’s primary theme or mood. To make one, simply mix a set of notes from musical instruments or any other source of sound. With audio loops, playing and experimenting can be done freely until you hit upon the perfect set of music beats.
And lastly, you have to create midi drum patterns which go well with the rest of the piece. You can use a single set or pattern of notes or combine different sets. Anything goes as long as it enhances rather than detracts from your work.
At times, midi drum patterns are not patterns at all. Rather, they consist of an assorted set of beats but played as repeating loops as well as acting as something similar to a secondary tier of melody or beat.
To summarize: in making your beats, start with forming a forceful bass line to act as your music’s integral part then solidifying it with fully-developed audio loops and one or a number of midi drum patterns.
