The Devil Wears Prada
The Devil Wears Prada is the name of a novel, a movie based on the novel, as well as a rock band and the concept for a television series. Let’s take a look at the movie.
In 2003 everyone was reading the Devil Wears Prada. It’s success inspired a movie. The reason so many novels are turned into movies is that they have a built in audience. It’s guaranteed that a % of the readers will see the movie no matter what. So that gives Hollywood an idea that there will be a base audience. That generally guarantees at least breaking even. Hollywood is business, business is money, so money drives movies.
A film can’t be exactly the same as a novel. A lot of condensing has to go on to fit it into a 90 or 120 minute time slot. Concrete is the foundation of most buildings. That doesn’t mean the building is made out of concrete. It’s generally steel and glass. Go in expecting these differences.
The plot goes like this. A journalism school graduate lands a dream job as assistant to the editor of a prominent fashion magazine. She doesn’t fit in with the other people. To fit in she begins dressing and talking like the people she once mocked. Our heroine saves a situation after a hated rival bombs. Her boss asks her to attend a Paris fashion show. In Paris she watches as her boss ruins someone else’s career.
Suddenly she sees herself as the very thing she despised. She decides to leave the magazine in favor of a newspaper writing job. The editor and others at the magazine now respect her. In fact it’s her former boss who gives her the recommendation that gives her the job at the newspaper.
The movie did well. Probably because of two things. One, as stated earlier, movies based on novels have a built in audience. The novel’s audience saw the movie in theaters. And it has a positive message. It shows that in some professions people have to act ruthlessly to get ahead. But when people are true to themselves, they can find success.
It’s worth the time to see or read the Devil Wears Prada.
